For 20 years we had cell phones

Post by Smucky »

And we could use them in the car, we could text in the car, etc. Nobody cared.
You know why? Because only rich people could afford cell phones 20 years ago. And to be rich, usually meant you were competent and could handle responsibility.
But then along came the iPhone and the other smart phones and the capitalistic idea of instead of paying for your $800 smart phone outright, lets make a 2 year long payment plan that would only add $20 a month to your phone bill so then the whole population could get smart phones.
But the other side of the population were dumb, and what they lacked in IQ, they also lacked in responsibly and hand/eye coordination.
They too thought they could drive a car while chatting on the phone or text while driving. But they couldn't.
Now we have hands free laws and live in a prison society. This is all because of poor people and iPhones.

Oh and the main point was those same poor people were too dumb to figure out forum software like vbulletin and everything got funneled into the digg/reddit/facebook infinity scroll interface. So in essence, poor people killed mastabeta.
But now we will raise up and recapture the market

(Yes I see the irony in that we are also all poor people, but we are the smart ones, not the dumb ones that ruined everything)

Doesn't that mean if we have a lot of poor people that cannot code, isn't that good for people that creates forums?

It's 2024 and an iPhone cost like $1500 so poor people, regardless of subsidized payment plans or not cannot afford them anymore. It's a cheap Chinese Android phone for them.

ChatGPT4's response:
It's important to approach the topic of smartphone use and driving safety with accuracy and consideration for all facts. The narrative that only the wealthy had cell phones 20 years ago and were somehow more responsible with their use, especially in cars, simplifies a complex issue and carries a tone of socioeconomic bias that doesn't contribute to a constructive discussion.

Firstly, the issue of distracted driving predates smartphones. While it's true that mobile phone ownership has become more widespread over the past two decades, attributing the rise in distracted driving laws solely to an increase in smartphone ownership across different socioeconomic classes overlooks the broader context. Distracted driving laws have been implemented in response to a growing body of evidence demonstrating the risks associated with using any mobile phone while driving, not just smartphones.

Research has consistently shown that the cognitive distraction of holding a conversation, texting, or using apps while driving significantly increases the risk of accidents, regardless of the driver's income level or the type of phone being used. This is a human issue related to how our brains function when multitasking, particularly when that involves operating a vehicle.

Furthermore, the evolution of mobile phone financing plans, like the ones that have made smartphones more accessible to a wider audience, reflects broader economic and technological trends rather than a causal relationship with driving laws or societal issues. The move towards more inclusive access to technology can actually have numerous benefits, including improved communication, access to information, and economic opportunities for a broader segment of the population.

It's also worth noting that hands-free laws and other regulations aimed at reducing distracted driving are based on a body of research indicating that these measures can save lives. Rather than viewing these laws as indicative of a "prison society," it's more productive to see them as part of society's efforts to adapt to new technologies while safeguarding the wellbeing of all its members.

In closing, while smartphones have indeed changed many aspects of life, including how we interact with our vehicles, the discussion around responsible use and legislation should be grounded in facts and empathy for all road users. It's not about the financial status of the phone's owner but about promoting safety and responsibility across the board.
Seems like it could have done better :borg:

ChatGTP is an TLDR over achiever and kicking in open doors. So much text and so little information.

ChatGPT has only gotten more unusable as it's aged. I thought about trying out Grok but then I didn't.

ChatGPT will eventually become like Joe Biden, always mumbling and completely inunderstandable.
