This is the theme we use: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... es/dark-17Lunar Aura wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 11:10 pm why is user info on the right of the post

Modify it to your liking and I can incorporate the changes. Or if you find a better theme, I might be convinced to install it

It is only as dead as you make it. One could post tons of content everyday, wouldn't be dead then.

I guess that is the difference between now and 2003. Back then if you wanted "content", you sort of had to make it yourself. Couldn't just go scroll twatter or facebook to get your adhd fix.

I don't think that's it necessarily. In 2003, the work you put into a post was seen by a wider audience, so it made you want to create content. Now, with reddit, you have to flavor it to the normies so that it gets upvoted to be seen. And that's just not fun.

But when a forum like GenMay can go from a hundred thousand active members to maybe two in the course of ten years, part of me wonders what is wrong with me that forum style conversations still appeal.

That is sort of the point of the For 20 years we had cell phones post. In 2003, there was a certain demographic of people online. We all had money and were somewhat tech savvy. And if there were "poor people" online, it was because they were even more tech savvy as they had to build a PC from garbage and then you had to figure out how to get on the net without spending money.Crawdaddy79 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 7:07 pm Now, with reddit, you have to flavor it to the normies so that it gets upvoted to be seen. Though I'm not really sure what point I'm trying to make here.

Yes, obviously I'd like to see more users here. But I have really wondered what completely killed the online forum. Every car or motorcycle I've ever owned had a dedicated forum until a few years ago. All of them shut down. They were such a treasure chest of knowledge. Slowly activity went to nil, and everyone moved to facebook groups. But those groups are such utter trash. Again, full of low iq "normies" whose content consists of pictures of their freshly waxed car or endless streams of low iq questions like "why my car won't start?"Crawdaddy79 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 7:09 pm But when a forum like GenMay can go from a hundred thousand active members to maybe two in the course of ten years, part of me wonders what is wrong with me that forum style conversations still appeal.
For the last couple of years, I really miss the feeling of actually communicating with people online that I felt like I knew even though I had never met. All the social media now just involves communication with strangers and that is just doing less and less for me.

I think I understand, and have made similar points. There was a barrier to entry that kept the riff-raff out. The first time someone would post to try to post an image it was hilarious and they'd get bashed. But most times they could be taught and grow with the community. The normies were intimidated by all of this and would never try to participate.Smucky wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 12:07 amThat is sort of the point of the For 20 years we had cell phones post. The classic forum-er has simply gotten older and isn't into this stuff any more. I think they grew out of it. Anyone new to the internet would not consider a forum for anything entertaining or useful, so getting new active users is mostly impossible. Shit I went to school 5 years ago and was floored by the fact that almost everyone under 30 does not understand what file structure is on a storage device.
So here we exist. The first generation of the internet's shitposters dying a quiet, slow death.

Maybe. I remember joining random chatrooms before the forums were a thing for me. I'd shitpost in those and get kicked out and keep making rounds. "What are those bumps around a woman's nipple?" People would try to answer. "Braille for Suck Here HAHAHA" *you have been kicked* Those were good days. That said, the normies from the time flooded the chat rooms and Discord is not much different.

Re: This place is dead.
Took me forever to find it.
About the image posting. I bought my own space. I made my own website. These steps were necessary to protect the integrity of my posts. The free services would kill your images without notice. Or compress them to unrecognizable piles. So I started hosting my own images.
I trolled people who would hotlink them.
Behold, the MySpace user who didn't notice her background led to three dudes sucking each other off for more than a few months.

Yea that is another point. As you age you get other hobbies and responsibilities, etc. If it wasn't for me already being stuck in front of a computer all day for work, I probably wouldn't even mess with social media at all.Crawdaddy79 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 2:29 am

Yea perhaps that is a completely forgotten generation or perhaps a picture of us in 10 years. Some people that are 15 years older than me used to talk about the BBS days... connecting via a 1.2K modem, and you could read the text in real time as people posted. But then 6k and 9k modems came out the text was scrolling faster than you could read!Lunar Aura wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 2:40 am even though i started shitposting in 1997 i consider myself second generation because i skipped the whole bbs baud modem generation

I had another point I was going to make with this post but I forgot it I guess because I'm old and I'm gay like William Shatner
